When we think of equestrian ideals, we don’t always think about chariots. But they none the less are parts of the history of the equestrian heritage. Whether it be far away lands, these being such as Egypt and Mesopotamia and legions of numerous army’s. As we know the Greeks were very much equine peoples, such as were Israelites, the Assyrians and Babylonian peoples. Various places can also be looked at in this equation, but many questions are still likely and continually will and going to be raised.

As we can tell the first chariots were believed to have had solid wheels, these were probably used to transport more than for warfare at that time. When the invention of the spoked wheel wheel happened in Mesopotamia toward the mid second century B.C, this transformed the chariot into a suitable vehicle in the use for warfare and military use. This development of the chariot had many a far reaching effect, civilizations of the ancient world now had vehicle to exploit the riches of fertile plans, such as the Tigris and Euphrates. Even to the extent of modern Russia and Kazakhstan, these are of the earliest known fully developed chariots, these were in essence burial chariots of the Andronovo Timber-Grave sites of the Sintashta-Petrovka. These are said to date from 2000 B.C. Asia Minor were chariot peoples, of which the use of the chariots had spread across into Persia, India and even into upper Egypt.

As we know of it, the chariot and horse were introduced to the Egyptians sometime around 1600 B.C by the Huksos people, these were a nomadic tribe from Central Asia. There are also tomb paintings and inscriptions from the people of Egypt, there have also been six chariots in number found in King Tutankhamen’s tomb, these chariots show how important they were to the civilizations of ancient Egypt.

From Asia Minor there were the Hittites who were of great charioteers. The Hittites were also a part of formidable enemy’s that faced against Egypt, there were many a great wars and conflicts that took place between these two empires, looking at some of the greatest history through chariot battles, these were at Kadesh in Syria, circa 1274 B.C. More than 2,500 Hittite chariots went into battle, 17,000 foot soldiers, they went to overwhelm the King Ramesses II of Egypt. Then we see that the Assyrians and Babylonians came in to power after the Hittites, these civilizations showed there hunting and warfare abilities in the use of the chariot. However, the horse itself didn’t play as big of a part in these civilizations as would have been expected.
